Dump station
Our favorite campground. Clean, quiet, great little playground with sand instead of the awful wood chips a lot of places use. Close to a lot of great trails and a couple of great outdoor museums.
I'm tempted to give this a bad rating to keep it all to ourselves. First time here and hands down one of the best campgrounds we've stayed at. We'll be returning annually. What to expect:
Only one trail directly from the camp. It leads down to Bartell Mining Camp
Less than 50 sites
This is a great campground; the only shortcoming I might note is the absence of any kind of laundry facilities. My wife and I used a pop-up camper. The site was paved and level with access to electricity and water. Very, very clean. There were very few campers there in early August of 2013. This is in an out-of-the-way location that has some wonderful scenic views of the canyon and is the destination of a scenic train-ride operated under the direction of the National Park Service. Canoeing on the Big South Fork River is quite scenic and a bit challenging. There's an historic site along the river/railroad about coal mining in the area decades ago that's VERY interesting.
Hesitate giving this 5 stars
great
Very pleasant campground...far enough removed from city can see stars. Excellent hiking
No camp store so bring everything you need
Composite picnic tables (Don't put hot things on them or they will melt the table. Some people seemed to not figure that out)
The only "bad" thing was the broken hose hookup at the dump station which prevented us from doing a thorough clean out of our black tank. Being the end of the season, we were sad. Have to pay to do it somewhere else. But again, a very minor inconvenience.
For the things that cannot be controlled by the park: we had great weather and great neighbors. Please remember two things though, if you're going to bring dogs (and we own dogs) their barking might not bug you but it does others. That's why we leave ours at home. Also, you're guitar playing and singing might be great to your momma but it infringes on others who might not appreciate it as much. Remember, the sound you make doesn't end at your campsite. There, my mini rant is done.
One playground (small)
Paved pads for your camper
Level gravel areas off your pad.
Clean bathhouse - men's side had two showers, two urinals, three toilets and sinks. Unsure of the women's side
Close to overlooks, trail heads, interpretive villages
Water and electric at each site
